Perhaps part of this issue of discipline starts somewhere else. I've been reading a lot over the last couple of weeks at the Founders Blog about a push to have the SBC churches report their membership accurately. There are not 16.3 million. That sounds good at conventions and in articles such as this one, but it is bearing false witness. Only about 30% of most SBC churches' membership rolls attend on a given Sunday. This is a problem that has gone on for years. It simply is not true to say that there are 16.3 million Southern Baptists.
