First Thoughts: Superman Returns

I saw Superman Returns on Tuesday night (27th) at the 10 PM showing. I am still processing it. I will go ahead and say that I really like the film. It's probably one of the best that I've seen.

I am going to see it at the IMAX theater at World Golf Village this Saturday and will post a full recap after that. Call me crazy, but I always like movies more after the 2nd viewing.

In the meantime here's a good review (WARNING SPOILERS):

BlueTights Network - Superman Returns!

UPDATE:

Here's a great quote from Focus on the Family's website regarding the parallels between the Man of Steel and the Man of Sorrows:

And while there's value utilizing any tool available to help others see their need for a Savior, it's important that we don't lose the message that what we need saving from is our own sinfulness. The Bible teaches that Jesus came to die the death we deserved because of our rebellion against God. In that message, Superman Returns parts company with Scripture. When Jor-El suggests that humans can be a great people if someone will simply show them the way, he stops short of the truth that by nature humans are a self-serving, self-destructive people who deserve eternal death apart from God. We needed a Savior to die that death for us, to give us the opportunity through Him to spend eternity with the God our sin keeps us from.

That's not the message of Superman Returns. And it doesn't need to be.

It's a great story all on its own.

iMonk: American Idolatry

The iMonk has started a new series about American Idolatry. I've thought about several of these things he brings up. A couple of weeks ago, I went to a "church service" held at the local baseball grounds (to attract non-believers), it was called Sermon on the Mound. They had a US Senatorial candidate share her "testimony" to the large audience, mostly members of the large Baptist church that was sponsoring the event. She went on and on about how our city was a city of God and how this church could begin a change in our city that changes the state, country and the world. Nice bit of schmoozing.

Anyway, I agree with Monk when he says:
How did it become possible to say that to be a follower of Jesus is to be a flag-waving American? Or a flag-waving anything for that matter? The Bible doesn’t have a single sentence that takes us in this direction. It’s simplistic idolatry and pure invention. The Kingdom of God isn’t represented by the government of the United States, no matter how superior our constitution might be to that of other nations (and I believe that, in God’s common grace, it is.) Our values and way of life may be influenced by a heritage that includes Christianity, but in what delusion does America, today, inspire this “cross and flag” version of our culture? It’s bizarrely idolatrous.

I highly recommend reading the whole article here:

On the SBC's Alcohol Resolution

At the recent Southern Baptist Convention, they passed a resolution that SBCers should not imbibe alcohol and that if anyone does it will disqualify from leadership.

I think the following quote from Martin Luther pretty much sums it up:
'Men can go wrong with wine and women. Shall we then prohibit and abolish women?"

Supes on iTunes

I couldn't wait.  The soundtrack for Superman Returns became available on iTunes today.  I'm finishing listening to the last track now.  It's pretty good.  It looks like Ottman wanted to showcase his own stuff, at least that's what's represented on the album.  But the album's only 55 minutes, so I'm sure there's plenty more in the movie.  I'm just glad the guy in blue is headed back to the screen.  Got my tickets for the 10 PM showing on Tuesday (27th).  Then we're going to the IMAX next Saturday.  Look to the Sky!
